What’s the scariest dream you’ve ever had?
I’ve had a lot of scary type dreams actually. I think the one that affected me the worst was one I had when I was about eight or nine. In it two people crawled into the room mom and I shared at my grandparents’ place through the ceiling, and they were going to try and kill me. Now that I think about it one of them was my mom’s boyfriend at the time :/ which is weird because even though I know now that he was a dick at the time I thought he was cool so idk
The scariest I had on a more existential level was one I had my junior year of high school. It was a long dream and near the end I started to be aware that I was dreaming.
I was in a library, and the (minimal) light shining into it from outside made the place look like it was underwater; everything was very dim and green. Most of the actual illumination came from computer screens that looked like they were just blank. It was circular shaped with the bookshelves positioned like spokes around a rotunda. I stood in the middle, and I wanted to leave the library, but I somehow knew there were no exits. When I thought about it, the lights came on, and the building transformed into a hospital. The hospital had doors to the outside so I could only leave from that version of the building. The problem was the hospital was full of monsters, a lot like the silent hill nurses except they had these huge mouths full of mushy gums and a few sharp teeth. I’d try to outrun them but they always caught me and killed me.
When I would “die” in the hospital I would pop back into existence in the middle of the library, like a respawn point in a video game. I tried several more times without success. Eventually I tried exploring the library itself, but when I passed too close to some shadows between the shelves a huge tentacle came out and pulled me into the dark and something ate me (this part I saw in third person, like I was watching a film, though the rest of the dream was in 1st person view). After the respawn thing happened several more times I realized I was dreaming, and actively tried to wake up. When I couldn’t, I actually didn’t get scared in the dream, rather I sat down on the floor and pouted.
It seems spookier in retrospect than it did when I was actually having the dream, but also pretty neat. Someday I want to maybe write a short story based off of it.
